>>A book review on Charlotte's Web

Since its publication, “Charlotte’s Web” has ranked first among the "Top Ten Children's Literature books in the United States”

About the author

E.B. White graduated from Cornell University and worked as a full-time writer for the New Yorker magazine for many years. E.B.White is an accomplished essayist, humorist, poet and satirist.

For many American children, E.B.White is famous for writing the first-class children's book "Charlotte's Web" (1952), which has sold more than 10 million copies and has been translated into 20 different languages.

Generations of students and readers are familiar with him because he is the co-author of the book The Elements of Style (and the revision). The book is a valuable booklet on essays and idioms.

At the same time, the author himself has numerous high academic achievements:

In 1971, he won the National Medal for Literature.

In 1973, he was selected as one of the 50 permanent academicians in the American Academy of Literature and Art.

In 1978, he received the Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for Letters.

The classics never die because they have rich themes. Here we will briefly describe three themes from “Charlotte’s Web”: (1) To understand friendship and life; (2) To cherish accompany; and (3) Our attitude towards life.

0 1   To understand friendship and life

Why does Charlotte the spider want to help the Wilbur the pig unconditionally? Does she want to benefit herself? No! Does she want to tell others how powerful she is ?

It’s because of friendship.

They met in the barn, Wilbur gave Charlotte a most enjoyable time, and Charlotte thought helping Wilbur from his troubles was the best reward she could give Wilbur! Because nothing can buy happiness.

For example, let’s take a look at a sentence from the book:

“Why did you do all this for me?" Wilbur asked. "I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you."

"You have been my friend," replied Charlotte. "That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die. A spider's life can't help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies.

By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone's life can stand a little of that."

Good friends like Charlotte treat their friends kindly and sincerely, they help each other, and support each other even in silent ways.

0 2  To cherish accompany

At the beginning of the story the new-born pig, Wilbur, was going to be killed because it was a runt and this was unfair.

The little daughter Fern refuted her father: "I am also thin and small, should I be killed?" "Because "it is not the pig’s own willingness to grow small and weak."

Then, Wilbur was saved and he thrived quickly under Fern's care, until Wilbur grew too big and Fern had to send him to her uncle’s farm.

In the novel, Fern plays the role of “parents”. Everyone is equal when they come into the world and should be treated friendly. When children reach a certain stage, parents should learn to let them go and help their children live in an environment that is truly good for them, even when sometimes it is challenging, because this decision will be more beneficial for their children’s growth.

0 3

Attitude towards life

The timeline of "Charlotte's Web" all happened within one year.

It describes the four seasons on the farm and all stages of life, including all of the sorrow and joy in the darkness and light.

Wilbur was lucky. First he was saved by Fern, then he was saved by Charlotte. If you want to be lucky, you need to have a positive outlook on life. When you don't give up, life will give you unexpected surprises.

Charlotte is also fortunate. She loves life, cherishes friendship, and is optimistic and positive. She does not fear difficulties. Although she finally dies at the end of the story, her lessons have touched every reader for a long time.
