| These days I have read a book called “Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son”. It is very interesting and I like it very much. The book is published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The book is written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This book tells us a story about Sherlock Holmes.
The book is about a case concerning the Duke’s missing son. Arthur, the Duke’s son and the German teacher were found out in a certain morning to have disappeared. Then Dr. Huxtable, the school master asked Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective of that time for help. Because the case is very tough and important, Holmes immediately accepted the case. And then he followed Dr. Huxtable back to Mackleton by train.
Holmes had a careful investigation of the entire area shortly after the arrival. He and his old friend Dr Watson spent many hours looking at the mud on Lower Gill Moor. They found the tracks of bicycle tyres, the tracks of sheep and of cows. On the way they also discovered the body of the German teacher Heidegger. Dr Watson thought it was not possible to find the answers. ‘Come, come, Watson’ says Sherlock Holmes, ‘Every mystery has an answer.’ Finally, he managed to find out the mystery and obtained the twelve thousand pounds promised by the Duke. But even Sherlock Holmes is surprised by the answer to this mystery.
Are all bicycle tyres the same? How many different kinds of bicycle tyre are there? When someone cycles over soft wet ground, the tyres leave tracks on the ground—but one tyre makes a deeper track. Is it the tyre on the front wheel or the back wheel? These questions are very interesting. If you finish reading the book, you can find the answer.
The book has seven parts:
The first part is “Sherlock Holmes Has a Visitor”. The part talks about a visitor—Dr Huxtable found Sherlock Holmes and wanted him to help himself to find the Duke’s son.
The second part is “Dr Huxtable’s Story”. This part is about that Dr Huxtable told Sherlock Holmes and Watson the story about the Duke’s son.
The third part is “Sherlock Holmes and Watson Go North”. The part tells us that Sherlock Holmes and Watson began to look for the Duke’s son.
The fourth part is “The Body on the Moor”. This part talks about that Sherlock Holmes and Watson began to follow the bicycle wheel tracks of the German teacher and at last they found the dead teacher.
The fifth part is “A Visit to the Green Man”. The part tells us that Sherlock Holmes and Watson tried their best to find out the truth. In this part, they found out where the lost child was.
The sixth part is “Sherlock Holmes Talks to the Duke”. This part is about that Sherlock Holmes visited the Duke and told him the truth, and it is very amazing, because Sherlock Holmes knew that the lost child was kidnapped by the Duke.
The seventh part is “The Duke’s Son”. The part talks about the truth of this case: in fact, the Duke’s “secretary” is his own love-child, and the son had some terrible plans. And then the story happened. In the story, Sherlock Holmes found an interesting thing: there were some horse-shoes, and they looked like some cloven cow’s feet. The story had a dramatic but reasonable ending.
“Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son” is an interesting and exciting book. In the book, we can know clever Holmes, the selfish Duke and the Duke’s cruel love-son and the tough case. It is a good book to read, I hope you can read it if you have time. |
