Obama Foundation Recap | 2023/1/3 21:20:00

As we wrap up the year and get ready for the next one, it’s worth taking a look back at how far we’ve come. By any measure, 2022 was a historic year with democratic values under assault around the world. We saw it in Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, in the unchecked spread of disinformation, and in the growing number of leaders who refused to stand up for the basic principles that make democracies function.

But despite these threats, what gave me hope this year was seeing so many people around the world fighting back. In 2022, we saw voters reject anti-democratic candidates at the ballot box. An international consensus began to form around steps we need to take to address the climate crisis. And around the world, ordinary people, especially young people, stood up for their basic rights.

We established the Obama Foundation to support the next generation of leaders, giving them the tools they need to advance values-based leadership. Our network is already starting to have an impact on different issues and in different communities. And the more activists, organizers and entrepreneurs I meet, the more I believe in their potential.

Since our founding, we’ve helped inspire, empower, and connect leaders in the U.S. through programs like the Obama Foundation Scholars Program, the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, and the Girls Opportunity Alliance. This year, we built on that momentum through new programs like the Voyager Scholarship that will give 100 American college students every year the chance to kickstart their journeys in public service. We also recently announced our Leaders United States program that will help even more young Americans put their idealism to work alongside hundreds of other Obama Foundation leaders here at home and around the globe. And this fall, we hosted the inaugural Obama Foundation Democracy Forum, bringing young leaders together to discuss how to build a stronger democratic culture and more durable institutions for the future.

We’ve also made significant progress on the construction of the Obama Presidential Center. When it’s complete, the center will be a place to learn more about my presidency. But more important than that, it will teach us democracy and active citizenship, and how we can come together and learn from each other. And it will be a place where folks from the South Side and beyond can enjoy a brand-new athletic center, a new branch of the Chicago Public Library, and green spaces to gather.

As we look to 2023, I could not be more proud of the work we’re doing and the change our young leaders are making in their communities. I hope you’re just as excited as I am for the year ahead.

From my family to yours, I hope you have a happy holiday season and joyful new year.
