A glimpse of A-school

Covering an area of 12,000 square meters, like an oasis in the crowded downtown, the Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School (A-School) is the first secondary and primary through-train school affiliated to a university in Hong Kong. What impress me most are as follows.
First, its School Motto--Passionate to Learn, with Confidence; Determined to Succeed, with Vision(敏求笃信,明辨力行),--is similar to the school motto of our Sun Yat-sen University. Guided by this School Motto, A-school strives to foster the Basic Qualities as a Talent in the 21st Century among its students. The Basic Qualities cover eight aspects: Self-understanding & learning to learn(自我理解,学会学习),Active exploration & problem solving (自主探索,解决问题),Team spirit & civic responsibility (团队合作,公民责任),Cultural cultivation & arts appreciation (文化陶冶,艺术欣赏),Technology application & information processing (科技应用,资讯处理),Expression & interpersonal communication(表达能力,人际沟通),insight into the future & sustainable development (洞察将来,持续发展),Career development & life planning (职业发展,生涯规划). Therefore, a student’s life in A-school is more than studying hard. Apart from striving for intellectual development and academic progress, students are encouraged to recognize their special talents and exceptional achievements in extra-curricular activities. For example, one special experiential learning is called Project Based Learning(专题研习), which usually lasts for one month. During this period of time, students are engaged in either overseas or local project-based research, which aims to enhance their inquisitive mind and generic skills. Besides, students are required to work in groups and share their research findings with others in a creative way on the carnival-like PBL Showcase Day.
Second, I really admire A-school’s teachers, not just because 68% of them hold a Master and Doctorate degrees, but because they practice their Mission Declaration in a creative way. They are dedicated to offering “Student-oriented Whole Person Education”, and make every endeavor to fulfill the worthy missions and objectives of the School. They mentor their students, fostering their personal growth to encourage initiative, positive attitudes, individuality and creativity, providing a basis for lifelong learning. Furthermore, they cater to the whole person development, providing a safe learning environment for the students, empowering them to be spiritually mature, wise and informed, artistic, physically strong, creative and civic-minded. Whilst broadening students’ horizons with an emphasis on developing their world knowledge, the teachers also focus on developing the 3-L (i.e. literacy in English, Chinese and Information Technology) to help students become global citizens with national pride at heart. In addition, teachers of A-school try to make education exciting, exacting, enriching and ennobling. By inspiring, challenging, guiding, nourishing, and rewarding their students, teachers of A-school take a holistic approach in assessing their students, both academic and non-academic, aiming to help them lead their future with creativity and enthusiasm. For example, they organize a variety of academic competitions to give students ample opportunities to participate in inter-school events and competitions. In this way, students gain enough exposure and recognition and learn to deal with pressure and difficulty in a proper way. Therefore, Students can explore their potential in an environment where East meets West, making the best of both cultures.
Third, the students of A-school make an amazing impression on me. For one thing, they are brave enough to voice their different opinions, even though sometimes they will be laughed at in a friendly way. Take one boy for example. When asked by his teacher Starry to give the answer to one of the reading compression, the boy replied, “I know my answer is wrong. But even so, I’d like to share it with you guys.” “Since you know your answer is wrong, that means you know the correct answer. Why not think about it and give us the right one?” Starry said in an encouraging tone. After thinking for about 30 seconds, the boy gave the expected answer, and his classmates gave him big hands. What a wonderful interaction between the students and the teacher! Besides, the students all take an active part in extra-class activities, which they regard as a wonderful platform to show their talents, to challenge themselves, to gain recognition, to enrich their school life, to experience and grow. For example, during the Arts Festival, some students give piano solo, some dance gracefully, still others give amazing drama performance, to name a few. From their performances, we can see that all the performers really enjoy the time on the stage, and their passion, confidence and joy shine from inside! How impressive!
How I wish my students can take an active part in the Art Festival to achieve their potential to the fullest! How I wish my students can be confident enough to voice their opinions even if their ideas are different from others’! How I wish my students can balance their studies and their extra-class activities, striving for excellence both academically and socially!
