Ms. Lao Cuiyue has succeeded in creating a relaxing classroom atmosphere for the students to participate in the classroom activities, so they can complete their learning tasks step by step confidently, feeling no pressure from the teacher.
In the first part, by going over the way of telling time, Ms. Lao guides her students to relate their prior knowledge to their new learning, which contributes to building up students’ confidence in role-play.
In the second part, before watching a dialogue, Ms. Lao reminds her students to use one of the learning strategies: guess the meanings of some new words from the context, which is good to improve their reading ability.
In the third part, Ms. Lao allows the students adequate time to guess and discuss the meanings and functions of the underlined phrases, so most students can master the important points and difficult points successfully. In other words, most students can achieve their learning goals set by the teacher in a student-oriented class, where they can learn individually and co-operatively, and they can get help and tips from their teacher readily.
In the fourth part, if Ms. Lao had reminded her students the 4 aspects (pronunciation, intonation, fluency, and body language) in the criteria for their role-play before their presentation, I’m sure the students would have given a much better performance.
